Fuentes Papers

UCLA purchased a number of letters and manuscripts concerning Sam’s translations of Carlos Fuentes’ novels. As their friendship grew Sam took more and more of writer/editor role in shaping the novels. He did the same thing with Herb Bix’s book, original about a period of Japan’s history during World War II, Sam thought that wouldn’t be interesting to many people and proposed the book become a biography of Hirohito. He edited every page and the faxes flew back and forth from Millboro to Japan. The book went on to win a Pulitizer prize. Sam’s Fuentes papers can be found here:
