Abstracts
Sam enjoyed painting abstract works though they didn’t come as easily to him as landscapes. Sometimes a landscape would develop into an abstract painting.
The Lovers, above was painted in 1999. It is an optical illusion where you can see one person or two.
Self-portrait with a mirror. It’s signed Adrevy. Sam played with signing his own name, or his alter ego, Andrew Sam Hileman or ASH.
Sam called this painting Family. He did it right after the birth of his second child in 1964.
Here is that second child four years later in 1968. He had Charles lie down on the drywall and drew his outline. He used sand and acrylic. Later in Virginia he made it more colorful.
This was made in Los Angeles, probably 1970 or so. It lives with Jerre Hitz in Los Altos Hills.
The painting above is of Douthat State Park.
This is a painting about war and peace.
He started it in the 1970s after first moving to Millboro. It changed over the years and I’m not sure he was ever happy with it,
Paint and ink on paper in 1996 after the visit of a teen-age friend who had to decide whether or not to keep an unplanned child with an unsuitable partner.
